Don’t Call It a Comeback

Fall is a blessing and a curse, but let us now focus more so on the former, thank you

Forgive the sentimentality, but fall is a time of reflection,  and TDM can hardly believe the difference between today, and one year previous.  On that day, TDM lay pickling in a hotub in MOAB, watching legions of bikes ride past on their return from digesting the Whole Enchilada, and wondering why his body would bother to attack him now.  To say he had the back injury coming is fair cricket, but it sure felt like an injustice at the time, and it took two months to walk unaided, and another four months to even think about a four mile ride on pavement.  But bodies can repair, and gradually yoga, walks, and careful progression on the bike brought us to the present,  where the body and mind are once again focused on railing dirt and drawing lines on maps (with a healthy side of dog walking and poop bagging, but that is another story).

In his previous missive to you (the nonexistent reader), TDM acknowledged that over six months of physical stillness might be a bit of a challenge to a kinetic soul, and yet asserted a proof of mental motion as the lone requisite for personal happiness… mobility, he said, is in the mind first, and the body only as a secondary effect.  Perhaps this is true, but if homeboy thought that his active mind would simply forget about adventures of a physical kind, then a moronic branding is probably in order.

In fact, physical plotting commenced only moments after the previous assertion was published, at first mapping out mundane  adventures like a successful walk to the kitchen to make a smoothie, and then the mailbox, and then…finally…the car and the world beyond his home.  At five months the act of walking a (slow) mile alone in the forest was akin to pulling off the Waldo Triple Crown…a huge success, but then one night he randomly bumped into the Wednesday night ride crew, who were pedaling up the mountain to sample the Mac in spring glory mode, and suddenly he could see with clarity how much he missed being amongst it with the wolfs and ninjas of his crew, and with that revelation  the depth of his remaining frailty was realized.  Suddenly the mental calm was gone, replaced by  a lot of dreaming about navigating the world outside his mind, and the deep seated sense that he might not regain access to that physical plane again.

Harnessing the panic, TDM then focused on one goal: He would be there for his crew’s annual June Oakridge A La Muerta Shuttle fest.  As the day approached, TDM was concerned (maybe more like petrified) that he would never survive the day, but he committed, and counted the steps (& poop bags) of recovery  like rungs on a long, long ladder.

And then, four months later, we zoom in on a disquieting van, bristling with eight bikes on the back, and eight dumb smiles on the faces of those inside.  TDM is wedged in the back row of this treacherously stinky van between Yeti-Wheel and Blurry Frank (who is extra blurry at the moment), and his smile is particularly obscene, for he is exactly where he wants to be.

And now we come to the present. The bliss of fall riding has settled in, and it is not lost on any of us that, after a whole year of pointing fingers at beer-stained maps, the season for the big rides is now.  In the future there will be a day when each of us is unable to dabble in this season the way we do now, and that is OK.  But for today,  through the lens of one calendar year, TDM is clear on this: that bombing trails with friends may not be necessary for general contentedness,  but  it’s a ass-ton more fun to gain or loose 23,000 feet with the wolves & ninjas of his pack than it is to dream about it.

Soon there will be more entries on these pages to celebrate that fact, including some really cool stuff from the Elkhorns and Tollgate areas…among others, but right now TDM is too busy riding and working on trails and basking in the glow of a working (if weaker) body to talk about it… see ya’ll out there!

The Year that was: 2016

Here we have a new year, with the old one already largely forgotten and thrown aside.  Still, TDM feels some pressure to reflect from (the) two individuals who frequently frequent this site and leave TDM crumbs of their approval and needs.  So, for them I will now proceed with the (now) annual Magnet awards for the year that was; 2016.  Selfishness will also surface, and some mention of future plans will be mentioned in the below.  You may now commence with the yawning and droopy eyes.

Low snowpack meant riding in places TDM often skiis for the second winter in a row.  If one comes equipped with toys, all eventualities are covered.

The broad summary is this: TDM rode less often, and failed to grab as many list rides as he might have preferred, but dude more than made up for that by the quality of the times had…a few lovable disasters helped as well, as did his 2nd new hardtale of the year (obtained after breaking the Dark Horse only 30 days into ownership).  Dark clouds, then bright sun, then clouds again…repeat.  Life in a nutshell, eh?

Grasshopper delivers, but is better ridden after the saws have done their work.

2016 in Review:

TDM’s 2016 rating: B+, with signs of brilliance.

Best ride nominations: 1) Grasshopper day with the crew ( Finally put it together, and we did a lot of hooting on the final descent)  2) O’Leary w Gnat-Man and Big-Papi (Great to get the boys out on this one), 3) Ollallie via the back door (Big solo day, and saw zero people) 4) Pyramids via Soda w the crew (Great crew, and got to show off the whole pyramids deal….EB off the couch was impressive)  5) Pyramid Day with Tricky( getting to know a rad guy a bit better, snapping some piccies, and laughing and hooting most of the time)  6) Alsea Falls w the Meilo & the schreddy kids(Last time I rode w these kids they were solid.  Now they shred, and we rode tight and pretty fast)  7) Prairie Peak-Alsea Falls linkup w Gnat-M  (A novel linkup of a classic TLRC ride w a good buddy.  The look on an enduro dude’s face as we descended to the top of the normal Alsea singletrack…priceless.) [Shit that’s a lot of stiff competition]

Winner is…a Tie!  O’Leary w Gnat and Papi, or Pyramids W TrickyMeans…, two of the better riding days o TDM’s little life.

A boy and his bike…Trick and his new Honzo atop Crescent Mtn.

Best Descent nominations: South Pyramid Trail, A secret Location in the Cascades, The Twinns,  Marys Peak, Crescent Mountain, The GBC (Grasshopper through Box Canyon), The Mining road off the top of Canal Ridge.

                Winner is…The GBC…but S Pyramid takes 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

Honorable mentions: South Pyramid and a Secret Loc in the cascades,

And now for TDM’s favorite annual award:

Spectacular failure nominations:  1) Bad Bridge- braking my brand new hardtale (and nearly myself) in the middle of nowhere on a cold, snowy day in the cascades.  Thanks for nothing slimy bridge. 2)  Failure to loop due to a cliffband on Canal ridge…I’m coming back, and bringing a rope.  3) Hopper Fail 1 -Trying to do Grasshopper the week before the Cascade Enduro crowd cut it out (lots of trees down, and had to retreat…glad I was alone for this caper).  4) The unmentionable fiasco at a secret location in the cascades…one of the best descents in Oregon, yet I won’t return again….Am I an idiot because I loved it?

Spectacular failure award: Bad Bridge…though I like my new Honzo even more than my departed Dark HorseJ.

Other Notable moments:

  • Amazing partnerships with the USFS, COTA, SATA, and others in working to improve the Old Cascades area trails.  The Pyramids are getting the attention they deserve.
  • One particular moment watching tricky loam-strafe some ferns w detritus on S Pyramid Trail, only to experience the same sensation and sounds myself seconds later….a moment forever frozen in my mind.

Biggest Regrets: Not one bikepacking effort, failed to treat himself to Round-Lookout Mtn AGAIN this year….sigh.  One of my favorite rides in the world, and yet…blew it for the second year in a row.

2016 themes to come

  • Riding with people more frequently…so revolutionary, this social interaction thing.
  • Helping with trail work at the Pyramids, Alsea Falls, and the Mac…get out there!
  • Big 1 day loops linking trails and cool logging road routes, a la Bohemian Crayfish…I’ve got some epics in mind, and at least one grudge with the Canal Creek Traverse and a certain cliffband that keeps fucking up masterful plans.
  • Bigger loops involving bikepacking.
  • A continued ticking away of various list rides and untested areas…TDM has several promising ones already marked on the maps and ready for trial..

Balance this

The choice is yours

The choice is yours

Obsession left to its own devices will end in tears every time, and thedirtmagnate has done some crying in his time.  Bikes and rides are no less threatening to the afflicted than other forms of addiction, and the struggle to not beat a dying horse is a constant among those who do love it all a bit too much. This year I endeavor to make choices, and will try to steer this ship only into ports of apparent plenty, and even then, only when I really want to make land.  I will also work on speaking only in metaphor…a good start.

In this spirit* the dirt magnate suggests that you check out this brief reminder of how TDM came to fly his most meaningful contribution to humanity strait into the F%#@ing ground: The Blue Box Effect

* which is not quite the spirit of enduro

The Year That Was: 2015

P1040247

Survival sometimes suffices for success.

Jan 1st, 2016…the first time I’ve written that, and an exciting thing to have done. TDM s snow lust has been awakened. The year 2015 was a fine model, but the bike madness that prevailed over the best winter/spring /summer of riding TDM can recall resulted in a rather robust case of bike-specific burnout that kicked in right around the time of the first rains. These rains also coincided with a trip to Maui and increasing snow flurries, and the combination of waves, drifts and burnouts resulted in a substantial radio silence on TDM’s part…ahem…sorry bout that.

The (nonexistent) reader will be spared the whitened details of the time between now and the winters beginning, but it seemed important to check in with assurances that the burnout has ended, and anticipation of summer is at an all-time high in the Magnet household. Winter may be a fine time for some shuffling and railing on the bleached stage of the cascades, but TDM can assure that by night the maps are on the floor, and wheeled concepts are being batted around at an unprecedented rate. Summertime preparations are afoot, and TDM is up for any of the bad ideas that winter has granted him…there are long lists already, and the summer of 2016 is looking to be a whopper.

So…yes…TDM is looking forward to a grand future, all while enjoying the charms of a distinctly snowy holiday season. With that said, it is the New Year, and so some reflection on seasons past is a must. Thus, I present to you, the TDM account of 2015…be strong dear reader, as the boredom may be substantial.

TDM’s 2015 recalled (Check HERE for photo essay)

Best ride nominations: Pyramids epic, The Bohemian Crayfish, Elkhorn Crest, Frog Lakes, Mary’s Peak, Dread and Terror

Winner is…The Pyramids Epic (Though Bohemian was surprisingly close)

Best Descent nominations: South Pyramid Trail, Ahab, UTS/LTS/Porcupine Rim, Frog Lake, The Twinns, Word to your mother, Alsea Falls from the top, Crawfish from the top, Marys Peak, Crescent Mountain, Trappers Butte (Scar Mtn), Dutch Flat.

                Winner is… Frog Lake Idaho.

Honorable mentions: Ahab, Marys Pk, The Twinns, S Pyramid.

Spectacular failure award: Winner is, Bad dog, good boy at a secret location in the Cascades.

Other Notable moments:

  • Riding in the Elkhorns with Pinky – Wilderness feel, great campsite, and goats everywhere.
  • The best winter of riding ever – Always tacky, seldom muddy, and tons of friends working it.
  • Riding Word to Your Mother almost every week of the year- may be TDM’s fav 1 mi descent anywhere.
  • Frog Lake with Pinky – wildflowers, big mountains, and the best descent of the summer, all with good camping at the base.
  • Exploring the Bohemian Crayfish ride – There is something so classic about this route, and riding it for the first time was as much fun as I had all year.
  • (Nearly) annual Moab trip with Pinky – amazing camp, and hit the best trails with maximum leisure.
  • The Pyramids Epic- After years of trying, TDM finally got to put the thing together… and it’s one of the best rides in Oregon.
  • Getting to share the charms of the Pyramids trail system with some buddies,- It is hard to get folks to try something unknown, and it was a good day out to say the least. Thanks for the trust boys. #mojodominance

Biggest Regrets: didn’t manage to pull off round-Lookout Mtn this year….sigh.

2016 themes to come

  • Big 1 day loops on mixed track routes, a la Bohemian Crayfish…I’ve got some epics in mind.
  • Bigger loops involving bikepacking, some being 100% singletrack.
  • A continued ticking away of various list rides and untested areas
